And Part 5  Is Here!

Part 6 Right Here!

When we left our story last time:

I looked around and realized I had come to the window and it had broken with my weight.  I was falling the twenty feet to the ground.  I continued screaming until I hit.  There were several sharp pains that accompanied several loud snapping noises in my chest and arm.  I knew several ribs and my left arm was broken.  I gritted my teeth against the pain and stood, relieved that my legs still worked.  I began to run.

And todays finale!

I ran away from my house, my prison of the past few days and the wraith that was now chasing me.  I ran.  I ran on and on, faster than I had ever ran before.  I continued looking over my shoulder and the only thing that I could see was the ghost, pursuing me into the fast ever darkening night.

I broke through some bushes and came onto an unlit street, screaming as another bout of pain that shot through my shattered arm.  Then I looked up and recognized the street.  Yellow police tape ringed off a large area in the center of the street.  I walked over to the perimeter of the crime scene and stared at the road.              The road was covered with an irregular dark stain.  Blood.  I knew that I was looking at the place where my madness began.  This was the place where I had killed another person.  The spirit caught up with me as I fell shuddering to the road.  The spirit began to laugh and taunt me more than it had for the past few days.

I stood and began to run again, darting here and there, screaming all the while.  My mind began to focus in an instant, for no discernible reason.  The voice in my head quieted down.  I froze as the brilliant beams of headlights blinded me for an instant.  An engine revved and tires screeched as a large sedan swerved around the corner.  I stood frozen as the headlights rested on me.  The voice began again taunting me anew.  I was immobile as the tires squealed again.  The car was coming straight at me.  Time slowed, an instant seemed an eternity.  I screamed again as I realized what was going to happen.  My life was soon going to be over.  I was dead.

I  screamed a final time as the car struck me and I fell to the pavement.  The car stopped down the road and I saw the driver lean out and scream in much the same way that I did four nights ago.  The last thought that went through my mind as I lay crushed and bleeding on the street was this, I was dead thanks to another drunk driver.

The next thing that I knew I woke up in that very strange morgue.  The nightmare of murder did not end with my death.  I am here in the after-life doomed to walk this world as a ghost.

I looked up from the doctor performing my autopsy and saw the shade that had tormented me smiling a wicked smile.  I was however, no longer afraid.  I could still hear the maniacal ramblings that had driven me mad and ultimately to my death.  He beckoned to me and I could not resist going to him.  He whispered, “Murderer.” and laughed again.  Then he pointed to an ephemeral phone that had appeared on the wall.  “Your turn murderer…” the shade said cryptically as he dialed and handed me the receiver.

The phone rang and a tense voice answered, “Hello?”  I couldn’t speak.  “Hello?” it said again.  I could only breathe into the receiver.  “Damn prank callers.” and the click of the phone being hung up followed.  Oh my.  Was this the guy who had hit me?  It had to be.  I dropped the phone.  I recognized the terror in his voice.  Oh my.  Was I to torment this poor soul in the manner that I was tormented?  Was I to drive him to his death also?  Would he be killed in the same manner…by a drunk driver?  “I can’t do that.” I said as I recoiled from the phone and the dangling receiver.

My tormentor began to fade as he called out to me, “…murderer…you must…murderer…I’ll see you in HELL!”  I didn’t want to torment this guy.  That is until I floated to the autopsy table and hovered above my mangled body.  I remembered what I had been, my hopes and ambitions, all changed because of one bad choice, all changed because of death.

Anger began to replace the fear.  I was being overtaken by fury.  Desire for vengeance over my lost life erased all pity that was trying to overtake me.  Was this what happened to the man I killed?  I didn’t care anymore.  With an almost righteous anger and purpose I floated back to the ghostly telephone and dialed a number that I didn’t realize I knew.  At the answer on the other end I began to laugh quietly.  And then, “…fear me…you…you…killed…meeeeeee.”
