News flash: The Ball is still a good toy!

Colorful Super ball, home

Image via Wikipedia

There are some people out there who would cringe at the thought of giving a kid a toy that was not filled with batteries or circuitry.  There are times I am not sure if there is anything but an electronic toy still available.  It seems darn near everything has a battery in it.

My kids have an unplugged Sunday every week.  It seems to be fairly good at making them realize there is more to the world than electronics.  this said by the man sitting in front of the laptop.  Anyway, I have been watching my youngest son a lot lately.  He needs to be watched as he is only 20 months old.

But here is the thing, he picks up a lot of things to play with.  He does play with the other kids gameboys, and he likes the TV, but his favorite toy is a ball.  A simple rubber ball.  He doesn’t care if it is the cow one, the princess one, the blue one, the pink one or the football.  He rolls the ball and laughs and laughs.  There is nothing in the world that is worth more than a childs unconditional joy.

It got me thinking though, why have we lost so much of our ability to play with something simple?  2000 BC, Og picked up a rock that was round and tossed it to his kid.  The kid pushed it back, and laughed.  This went on for hours until Oog came by and saw how much fun they were having so he joined in.  Pretty soon everyone was playing.  Years later we have inflated rubber balls.  And all was good.

Go out and roll a ball.  Pick up a stick and throw it, make it a sword, a magic wand, a hammer.  Watching a 1 year old play with simple objects is fun to watch.  It really makes you think and try to get some of that ultimate joy back in your life.

Just something to think about.

This is the one where I Rant on Energy Drinks.

Anyone like energy drinks?  I have quit most of them but there are days when I can’t see my keyboard without them.  Having the new baby doesn’t help with that.

Caffeine is the thing that is so needed.  Wake up.  Now I don’t drink coffee so the best avenue for caffeine besides the pills (which are weird for some reason) is the energy drink.  My question is, who came up with the idea that most of them have to taste like monkey piss?

Red Bull is the original offender, and probably the worst.  There are plenty of imitators and none are the better!  Granted there are many other flavors now,  but there are still 2 basic schools of flavor.  Monkey piss, otherwise known as, I really don’t know what it is supposed to be citrus maybe?  and then the fruity flavors.

The fruity flavors are the best, in my opinion because I don’t like drinking monkey piss.  I tried a new drink the other day and much to my chagrin, it was monkey piss flavor.  I guess it is time to give up the things all together.  Besides, they are too expensive.

Anyone else feel the same about energy drinks?  anyone with a deep seated love affair with Red Bull?  Let me know in the comments, I am going to try and go the week without any energy drinks.  Can you?

Again and again

Are you like me?  do you have a bunch of posts or post ideas in draft form that you just can’t seem to get done?  I have had one that is now 5 months in the working and still not finished.  I was going to finish it today, but, now I am not.  Today, I wanted to write about a quote that I found.

Now looking back on this blog, my most popular post was a podcast based on another quote, “Light a Candle instead of Cursing the Darkness.”    That one is about doing.  DOING.  Doing something.  Don’t complain about what you are given, do something about it.

Today, another quote with the same message.  Ready?  “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”  How is that?  Another, go out there, and do something.  Go do something positive in the face of what previously was considered diversity.  Do I do this?  Sometimes.  Should I do it more?  Most definitely.

So, how do you go about turning the adversity into the positive?  Most days I don’t know.  Some days I only want the adversity so I don’t seem so bad.  I don’t know what the answer is, the deep part of yourself that you have to find in order to go out there and do the positive.  I have been trying to find it for 39 years now, and I still don’t know.

I have been up and down my whole life, trying to find the positives, and, when I do find those, keep those positives in mind to create more.  I can’t say that it has worked, but it is there somewhere.  One of these days I will find out how to keep a hold of it and not piss it away like I have so many times.

How do you deal with adversity?  How do you go about dancing in the metaphorical rain?  Let me know, I need the help.

Nothing But A Pile Of Sticks: Part 5- Moving Again

Do you ever get a strange little…Deja Vu feeling? That is what I had when we got into this new house.  Imagine if you will a deep dark hole.  Then imagine throwing everything that you own into it, except the computer of course.  That is just how I felt On this July 1st when I picked up my second Uhaul truck in a week.

And then it was just doing it all over again.  Moving your entire house twice in the space of a week is exhausting, not only mentally, but physically.  Or maybe I should say that the other way around.
