Used Cows For Sale!

This picture has made me laugh for years.  I don’t know where I got it from so if it is yours, let me know and I will give you credit.  This picture is funny because it is factual, but absurd!

This is a great example to me of a brilliant marketing strategy.  Think of this, if I own a cow and want to sell it what is the generic wording to use?  Cow for sale right?  Now look at this guy.  Same type of cow for sale.  Maybe just has too many other cows and needs to get rid of one.  but he says Used Cow for sale.  I think there is a certain implication in that one word that brings up thoughts of a used car.  Broken in but not used up, or barely rolled the sucker into the dealership to get rid of it.  (I have had 2 of those)

How much more likely are people to call the number for the Used Cows sign?  Given a choice of Cows for sale vs Used cows for sale, I can see perceived value in a good quality Used cow.  Maybe he should have a new sign with Previously Owned cows for sale, just to keep up with the times.

We can learn a lot about marketing with one word.  When we market ourselves, or ebooks, our websites, and our blog posts, Titles can be incredibly important.  There have been blog posts out there that I have clicked on sheerly because of the title.  There are posts of mine that people have noticed because of the title.  Even the best posts will not get read without people coming by.  The best way to get people interested in coming by is to have a catchy title.

Small caveat, catchy titles are great but don’t stress too much about it.  Don’t make the mistake of having a great title with unrelated material or complete garbage following it.  Eventually people will know you and your brand and will read just because you wrote it.

4 year olds fishing for 8 month olds

I had somewhat of a horror movie moment the other day.  I took my 4 year old and the baby to the Wal Mart to get the essentials, you know diapers, milk, screws etc.  I am, if you haven’t read about it by now, somewhat of a fishing nut.  I always want to go fishing, even if I don’t get the chance.  So when at Wal Mart, I cant help but walk through the sporting goods section.

It was there that trouble shocked my brain.  Now, Amelia, my 4 year old decided to break her foot last weekend so she had to ride in the cart while Tristan, the baby rode in his car seat in the upper deck of the cart.  Amelia started talking about how she wanted to go fishing with her pink fishing pole and how she was going to catch a big fish with Daddy.  I was so proud.  Up until now we give her a bit of line tied to a butterfly plug that she could thrash around with.

I started thinking, her birthday is in 2 months, she will be 5 and she could go fishing for real….hmmm.  Let’s get her a tackle box and some hooks and we can go to town.  It was at that point she piped up and said how much fun it would be if she could fish with Tristan.  I said OK, and then she said she wanted to teach him how to cast.  All I could think of then was her tossing back a real live hook and catching the baby.  More than once.  My daydream vision had multiple hooks in his body and Amelia tossing him into the lake, car seat and all.

Maybe she isn’t ready for a set of real hooks all to herself.  I think we can wait another year to jump off of that bridge.  I still bought her a pink tackle box and some pink power bait to go in it.  We are still going fishing.

Thoughts?  Questions? Criticism? Misguided attempts at humor?  The comment section is waiting for your fingers to fill it with wisdom.

Have a great weekend.

Tech is good but so is Grease…

If you have been reading this blog for long you may have picked up that there is quite the dichotomy to my life.  I like so many different things, from medieval weapons, to the fur trade of the 1800’s and the mountain men, to sourdough cooking, to car repair, to fishing, to computers and web stuff.

For all of the things that the internet is, it is wonderful.  I love technology, and the web, and my blog, and my laptop, and….well you get the idea.  But the other day I was reminded how much I like grease.

I had to rebuild my tiller motor so that A. It will run, and B. So I could start it.  There is something immensely satisfying in taking something that will not run very well and making it work.  There is some of that satisfaction when you are playing with code, but code doesn’t smell like exhaust when it works right.

Maybe it was just spring fever.  I love to be outside.  Maybe it is because I need to get my garden in.  Maybe the fishing bug has bit rather hard again and I need to get the garden in so I can go fishing.  I am not too sure, but I do know that there is not much better than some manual labor in the spring.  Outside, tearing down equipment with hand tools.  I can feel the chest hair growing even now.

How about you all?  What gets you out from in front of the computer and into the real world?

I’d love to hear it, comments are open below
