HopeKids

Hello folks!  Today I wanted to tell you about an organization that we belong to.  It is called HopeKids.  HopeKids is  non profit charitable organization that is all about helping families of kids with terminal diseases and afflictions do “normal” things.  They primarily were founded with cancer kids in mind and have since broadened out to include all sorts of diseases including, heart disease and Kidney disease.

They recognize that all of these diseases affect the whole family.  They are permanent diseases that can be treated somewhat, but in most cases kids can’t do things that other kids can.  Most of the kids in HopeKids here in Utah are immunocompromised, including my daughter.

Please visit http://www.firstgiving.com/ameliaskidney and sign up to be a sponsor for our team!

If you don’t know, immunocompromised means that they are in treatment for especially cancer, or they take drugs to suppress their immune system so that the cancer cells can be killed or, like my daughter, so she does not reject her kidney transplant.  Most kids in this situation have to be very careful where they go because they can get sick very easily.   Even a simple cold can turn into pneumonia because these kids can’t fight the bugs.

HopeKids gives families a place to go where everyone is special because everyone has some disease.  It becomes very close knit and it is great when you go to a place where people understand what you are going through and all of the kids can be treated normally.

I can’t tell you how many people would turn away or walk away from us in the store when my daughter had a feeding tube in her nose.  Or if they caught sight of her dialysis catheter that was in her upper chest wall.  I saw people look in horror as we would give her medications.  And she did not have many things to show.  There are kids with breathing tubes, as well as feeding tubes, or wheelchairs or crutches.   I have seen people avoid all of these type of kids.

HopeKids doesn’t.  No one cares what these kids are hooked up to or what they have in them to keep them alive.  No one cares that some are bald from chemotherapy or that they have to wear a mask to keep any germs out.  I still make my daughter wear a mask about half of the time, and that is over a year out from her transplant.  No one thinks twice about that at a HopeKids event.

What kids of things do they do?  Movies, arcade visits, plays, we have seen the dress rehearsal of the nutcraker from a pro ballet troupe for the past couple of years.  They do a birthday party each quarter for the kids who have birthdays in that quarter, and each kid gets a personalized present from HopeKids.   We got to go to this event: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700031968/Hope-Kids-offers-a-modern-fairy-tale-for-children-with-illnesses.html.

All of these events are free to the HopeKid and the family!  Which brings me to another point today.  While HopeKids is always looking for donations, we are participating in their yearly fundraiser.  It is a 5K run/walk or an adventure walk if you prefer.  Here are details from the site itself:

Date: Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Time: Registration starts at 8 AM, Races start at 9 AM

Fundraising Goal: $40,000

Come and join us for the 2010 HopeKids Wasatch Adventure taking place at the beautiful This is the Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City!

All proceeds to benefit HopeKids Utah.
HopeKids is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Get a fundraising team of up to five together and choose one of four activities to participate in:

  1. The Adventure Walk: Suitable for kids and families, walk the Park grounds visiting each of our Adventure Stations.  You never know who you might meet!
  2. 5K Walk.
  3. 5K Run.
  4. Remote Participant: If you are unable to be at This is the Place on September 11th, feel free to get one or more teams together in your community and walk or run for Hope!

When you walk or run to support HopeKids, you are raising the spirits of hundreds of kids and their families in their greatest time of need.  You are giving them the gift of HOPE!

It’s simple. Use this page to create your team fundraising page. From there, share the team page with family and friends, and spread the word about your WALK OR RUN FOR HOPE. You can walk the 5K or run the 5K.

You can collect “offline” gifts of cash and checks and list those on your fundraising page. Bring those donations with you to the Run/Walk in an envelope clearly marked with Team Name and total enclosed. You can also collect everything “offline” and not use a fundraising page.  (All checks made payable to “HopeKids”)

We hope you will show your support of HopeKids with your time and energy and help raise money when you come and WALK OR RUN FOR HOPE!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Like last year, there is no registration fee, but we are asking that all teams raise a minimum of $100 for participation in the Wasatch Adventure.  Team sizes are limited to 5 participants.  If you have more participants, consider starting a second team!

Encourage your family and friends to support you! This could be donations to your team, or they could join your team and create their own fundraising page. Or they could create their own team and compete against you!

So Here is the deal, our family is going to participate in the Adventure Walk.  We are going to strap on the hiking boots and get the baby in the stroller.  We are looking for sponsors for our walk!  We are looking to raise $100 or more by the September 11th deadline.  If you can possibly help with $1 or two, I would greatly appreciate it.  All of the money goes directly to HopeKids and helps to fund the yearly activities that we can be a part of.

Please visit http://www.firstgiving.com/ameliaskidney and sign up to be a sponsor for our team!  As a bonus if you do sponsor our team, aside from the gratitude of our family and the satisfaction you get from contributing to a worthy cause, I have some free bonuses for you.

Ruminations on Holiday Magic

The First Thanksgiving, painted by Jean Leon G...

Image via Wikipedia

Hello folks.  Today, as most of you know, is the day before Thanksgiving in the US.  I do like this holiday for itself, a day when we can make a giant fancy dinner and overeat before dozing off watching football.  I have always liked the day for giving us an excuse to be together as a family and just give thanks to the Almighty for allowing us to be here for another year.

Granted, our location has changed over this last year but the family is still together and that is what makes the home.  I know I won’t be seeing my sister and her boys or my other sister, much less my Mom and Dad.  I am ok with that.  Why?  I am in charge of my family now.  I am in charge of my kids and making this another special day for them.

That is what happens when you get older.  That is what happens when you are the parents.  You are now in charge of making any holiday magical.  I know I have written before about these things but I feel it is worth repeating.  I am in charge of making Holiday’s magical for my kids, and Thanksgiving starts that holiday season.

Not Black Friday.  Black Friday has become a blight on the image of Thanksgiving.  I know I have enjoyed reading the paper on Thanksgiving night to decide what to get the kids but the commercial push for Black Friday this year has almost eclipsed the Thanksgiving it is supposed to follow.

I don’t want to get on the Black Friday kick, of you want more of that head over to Cantankerous Old Coots  and read Ralphs post today and mine tomorrow.

As I write this, I am bathed in the glow of some Christmas lights.  We spent Tuesday getting a good portion of our Christmas decorations put up.  Much to my chagrin that we can’t wait until Saturday, but the kids are really excited to get that little jump on Christmas.

They are excited for the whole Santa and family thing.  We are going to be making gifts for each other again this year and the kids are looking forward to deciding what they can make for their siblings.  I am still trying to decide what to do for them individually, but I am writing them a story for all of them to be revealed on Christmas Eve.  Any illustrators out there who could use a couple of bucks???

Back to Thanksgiving.  I usually do the turkey and dressing.  I have done all of it in the past few years when my wife has had to work the night before or on the day.  Nurses have to work holidays, you know.  I get a kick out of making the big dinner and serving it.  I like help with it too.  My wife willbe home this year and doing better than half of it.

I look forward to playing with the kids, hopefully it will be warm enough to go throw a football around the back yard.  I also am looking forward to watching the Macy’s parade with them and I hope that we can keep the focus on Thanksgiving and the family and looking forward to Christmas and not just the shopping.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, do something nice with your family today no matter where you live.

My Blog Is Calling And I Must Go!

I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about the mountains.  How the mountains were calling me and John Muir. During the course of that post I said that my blog is calling and I must go, paraphrasing John Muir of course.  I had said that it would be a great t-shirt.  It still would be.

Today I wanted to write about commitments.  I know there are posts all over Blogistan about how to divide your time and do everything that you want to.  This is only partially about that.  We all have our commitments to our families, wives, husbands, kids etc.  We have work commitments.  We have housework commitments.  There are church and community commitments.  And, if we want a piece of this wonderful internet pie, there are commitments to our websites and blogs.

My blog is my second mistress.  My laptop is my first mistress and I dearly love the internet.  It is hard to budget the time to sit down and write and read blogs and comment on blogs and take care of the kids and cook dinner and do laundry and mop the floor, and entertain the wife, and on and on and on.  So where do you dig out the time to write?

The answer is wherever you can.  Forgo TV for a night, or a couple of hours.  Forgo watching the kids go to sleep.  Go to bed a bit later or get up earlier.  Ben over at 6aliens.com and James at the infopreneur both talk about this.  Carve out the time for your blog and your website.  There is a lot of time devoted to growing your blog and sometimes the web design gets pushed back.  Hard to read, cluttered sites do not bring back traffic.  Work on your site as well.

Tell your friends, “I can’t.  My Blog is calling and I must go.”  Tell your wife (only once in a while), “My Blog is calling and I must go.”  (Flowers smooth that over if you do it too much).  You can tell your kids the same thing, once in a while.

The hard part is figuring out when it is actually beneficial to just shut the laptop and let your blog call.  Devote everything you possibly can to your site so that it will make you money.  Throw everything you can at it so that you can have more time with your family when it is keeping its own head up.  It will still call to you, but not as loud.

When you are at that point, you can take off and go on fabulous vacations because you will be one of the pros like David Risley, or Darren Rowse, or John Chow even.  Your blog will still be calling, you will still go, but you can go from around the world.  John Chow likes to have all of his stuff online so he can access it from anywhere.  WordPress is like that as well.

My blog is calling and I must go, for I want to be a Pro.  I need the cash.

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below:

Fiction Saturday 3! The Man With the Hazy Suit Part 2

**Hey folks this is a reprint of part 1 of The Man With the Hazy Suit that origonally ran on May15, 2010.  I have been few and far between regular posts this summer, and that is the same thing that has killed some of my favorite TV shows, like Alias.  So I am going to rerun the whole story and finish it strong!  Thanks for reading for the first time or rereading if you have been here before.  The Choose your own adventure aspect is not available anymore.**

Hello friends, I hope you all had a great week.  Today I present part 2 of  “The Man With The Hazy Suit”  There is a quiz at the end so pay attention!

If you still need to read part 1, here it is!

When we left our story last time:

I looked back to my notebook and tried the 3 numbers as the combination.  The lock opened.  This was way too easy.  Something had to be, well, wrong for it to be this easy.  I took a deep breath and lifted the latch. Inside there were 13 yellow legal pads, filled with a tight handwriting.

My hands shook as I took them out of the locker and headed to a bench in the station where I started to read.

My name is Aaron Goodwin.  If you are reading this, I am dead.  And all for the better.”  This opening line made my heart skip a beat.  I decided to read the rest before calling it in.

I had never been interested in anything to do with the law.  Sure I had read detective stories as a kid but I never thought I would be in one.  I am sittting here now, trying to figure out what to do with the information that I have gathered.  The outcome does not look good, for me.  I need to get all of this out, get all of this written down so no matter what happens, there will be a record of the truth.  It may be cliche, but I have to do this.”

I knew there was a long night of reading ahead of me.  I couldn’t read this here.  I stood and forced myself not to run to my car.  I resisted the urge to drive home at full speed, lights and sirens blaring.  I had found something great.

And today we join our story already in progress:

I made it home in record time.  I entered my apartment in a rush, glad I was the only one who lived there.  I dropped all of the legal pads on the table and prepared coffee.  I was going to need it tonight.  Case solved or not, I was going to know for sure what was in those legal pads.

I got my things straightened out and took up a residence in my favorite chair.  The small table at my elbow held the coffee pot, my mug, and the legal pads.  I switched on the light and began to read.

My name is Aaron Goodwin.  If you are reading this, I am dead.  And all for the better.

It may be cliche, but I have to do this.

First some background.  My name is Aaron Goodwin.  I am 6’2” tall with brown hair and blue eyes.  I was born in Washington State, near Seattle, in 1974.  My parents were killed in a car accident when I was 9.  I was sent to several foster homes and beaten relentlessly in one when I was 16.  After I got out of the hospital I filed for emancipation.  I was on my own.  I worked hard in any fast food joint that would hire me so I could eat.

I managed.  I had a small crappy apartment that was dry if not much else.  I had some food.  I had a radio.  One day I wasn’t saddened to hear of the violent death of my last foster father.  “…And we have some more details coming in now, it seems that Mr. Chan was beaten to death with a spindle from the staircase and then covered in gasoline and set on fire.”  The Reporter sounded horrified.  I felt slightly squeamish at the method of his death, but not sympathetic.  “Police have no leads and are currently trying to figure out anything related to this senseless crime.”

“Yea, right. Senseless.” I said to myself.  How many other kids had he beaten in his care.  Mrs. Chan knew it was happening and did nothing about it.  Titus Chan had been a bad man and I figure he got what he deserved.  What shocked me was the sharp knock on the cheap door to my apartment.

I crossed the worn hardwood and opened the door.  2 police officers stood there.  “Mr. Goodwin?” the older man asked.  I nodded like a chimp.  “We would like to ask you some questions about where you were last night.  Can we come in?”  “S, Sure” I got out and swung the door open.  “Come in.”

They entered, looking around with those cop investigator eyes, taking in everything in a glance.  There was not much to see.  I offered them the 2 chairs that I owned.  They declined.  “Mr. Goodwin, we need to talk about your previous foster family.  You see, Mr. Chan is dead.  He was killed last night.”  The older one again.  “I just heard on the radio” I said.

“Yea,” the younger cop chimed in. “Well, where were you last night between 11 pm and 3 am?”  I thought for a moment.  “ I was at work until 12:30 and then back here to sleep until my 7:00 shift at the Bagel Hut.”   They both had notebooks out now.  “Uh-huh,” the older one said. “And where were you working until 12:30?”  “Taco Barn.” I answered.  “Can anyone verify where you were after that?” The younger one asked.   “Ummmm” I said intelligently.  “Mr. Barnes down the hall saw me come home about 1 and after that I was sleeping.  I made it to work at 7 on time.”

“Ok.” Said the older one again. “We just have to ask, you understand.  We know he was pretty rough on you.  Do you know anyone else who may have wanted him dead?”  “Take your pick” I said.  “He beat everyone I knew in that house.”  They thanked me and started off.  Each of them produced a business card at the door.  “If you think of anything else that may help, please call.” The younger man said with a smile.  I took the cards.  “Thank you.” I said lamely as I held the door for them and they exited.

“Damn” I thought. How many times did I wish that son of a bitch dead.  I didn’t have the nerve for it of course.  I went back to the kitchen and looked at the cards.  Sergeant Stebbins and Patrolman Tompson.  Hmm.  I threw the cards on the counter and went back to the radio.

Ok Kids, here is the chance you were waiting for!  Your chance to decide the direction of the story.  If you haven’t guessed, Patrolman Tompson in the narrative is now Sergeant Tompson reading the notes.  So, here goes:
