Perseverance and the Princess Bride

Hey Folks Happy Monday!  It was a crasy weekend so I just have a short thought and a short video for you.

This is all about perseverance.  The ability to keep going in the face of great adversity.  The ability to keep blogging and building your business despite the demands of life, or your family, or anything else that gets thrown in your way.

This clip  is from what is probably my favorite movie ever (even though I had to give up a top 10 favorite movie list years ago.  Too many good movies on it), The Princess Bride.  This movie has been around since 1987.  If you haven’t seen it, shame on you.  Go rent it.  Get it on Netflix.  But check it out, it is really good, and PG so the kiddies can watch too!

To set up the scene, Inigio Montoya has been searching for the 6 fingered man who killed his father for over 20 years.  He has been totally obsessed with finding this guy and challenging him to a duel for his fathers honor.  He finally finds said 6 fingered man and the next scene follows:

So take this into your life and your blogging, Stay the Course.  Even if it takes you over 20 years to reach your goals, you can achieve them.

Even when the odds are against you and everyone is trying to cheat and stab you in the gut when you come around the corner, find that place inside you that holds your drive and your purpose.  Find it and tear it open.

Stick with whatever it is you are doing until you meet your goals.  You will succeed.  Man I sound like Nate Hangen today.  That is a good thing!

Go enjoy the day.

Poetry Tuesday: Revolution

Hello again.  I hope there is some interest left in this blog, hopefully I can get back on the horse and write like I should.

Thatched cottage Viet Nam

Anyhow, I found this old poem in a book last week.  I call it “Revolution” but any title suggestions would work.  This was another written during some strange mindset that had to do with war inspired epic style poems.  They all have to do with swords and sorcery themes though, I have yet to write the Viet Nam epic or the Iraq narrative.  That actually gives me an idea……

For today, enjoy “Revolution” and let me know what you think in the comments below.  This blog is like a fairy, you have to believe in it for it to exist.  so clap (leave a comment) and it will continue to rise!

Revolution

By: Justin Matthews

The revolution begins, the trumpets cry forth,

A stout wind begins to blow from the North.

A dark storm approaches, for now it won’t be long,

‘Till the oppression is ended and we’ve righted the wrongs.

Our hero emerges, a shadowy soul,

To break the resistance, is his only goal.

Defiant he stands, in the face of the storm,

His sword raised in protest, his voice raised in song.

O’er the murderous forces struggling to kill,

His war song goes forth, strong and not shrill.

With a cry and a yell, forward he springs,

into the midst of his foe, for Country, for King.

Hacking and slashing, thrusting and parry,

Out hero unscathed emerges Death, ever so scary.

Begging and pleading, they part on his blade,

knowing all well that they will never be saved.

Slashing and stabbing while casting a spell,

the errie midnight darkness envelops them well.

The dark it enfolds until the last foe has fallen,

and our hero stands tall, victory’s cheer he is callin’.

And suddenly the sky is alight with the sun,

And with a scream and a cheer, the battle is done.

And our hero fades back into the dark whence he came,

The hero of all, yet none knew his name.

A wraith of great prowess, endurance and form,

is gone on the heels of the storm.

Gone to wait until we need him again….

Have a great Tuesday.

Fiction Saturday 3! The Man With the Hazy Suit Part 3!

**Hey folks this is a reprint of part 3 of The Man With the Hazy Suit that origonally ran on May22, 2010.  I have been few and far between regular posts this summer, and that is the same thing that has killed some of my favorite TV shows, like Alias.  So I am going to rerun the whole story and finish it strong!  Thanks for reading for the first time or rereading if you have been here before.  The Choose your own adventure aspect is not available anymore.**

Hello!  Welcome to another exciting edition of Fiction Saturday.  I hope you had a good week and are ready for more mystery and intrigue.

I do have to say, I am a little disappointed in the results of the choose the story poll from last week.  As a result of that poll, I am going to do what the readers have voted on and continue the story from Aaron’s notebooks.

I am still working on the next fork but it may be the last one.  I will see how it goes.  Fiction Saturday will endure though!

So after that long introduction, here is Fiction Saturday 3, The Man With the Hazy Suit Part 3!

Part 2

*****

When we left our story last time:
“Ok.” Said the older one again. “We just have to ask, you understand. We know he was pretty rough on you. Do you know anyone else who may have wanted him dead?” “Take your pick” I said. “He beat everyone I knew in that house.” They thanked me and started off. Each of them produced a business card at the door. “If you think of anything else that may help, please call.” The younger man said with a smile. I took the cards. “Thank you.” I said lamely as I held the door for them and they exited.

“Damn” I thought. How many times did I wish that son of a bitch dead. I didn’t have the nerve for it of course. I went back to the kitchen and looked at the cards. Sergeant Stebbins and Patrolman Tompson. Hmm. I threw the cards on the counter and went back to the radio.

And now we join our story already in progress:

I sat the legal pad down and reached for my cooling coffee.  I could remember that day.  How ironic was it that I was the junior detective that day and now I am trying to make heads or tails of what is going on.  Was there anything that I could have done differently that may have made a difference in this guy’s life?  Maybe not.  I picked the pad back up and read some more.

All of the next day I thought about Mr. Chan. I really was not upset that he was dead.   I didn’t have anything to do with it so why were the cops there?  I knew it was just their job and I was a lead.  Glad it didn’t lead to anything more.

I had to get to work.  I showered and dressed quickly not wanting to be late again.  I made it just in time, but I wasn’t a very good employee that day.   That entire shift I had flashes of Mr. Chan screaming.  And burning.  Oh the burning.  I couldn’t figure it out, so I just went back to work.

Later that night I made it home around 12:45 and fell into my bed fully clothed.  I was exhausted.  I had eaten at the Taco Barn and was now fighting indigestion as well as exhaustion.  I gave up altogether and slept.   I fell asleep before I even remembered to turn off the light in the entryway.

That night I had a nightmare.  I dreamed that, well, things were not quite right with the world.  I was following a man down the street.  I never saw his face but he reminded me of, me.  One of the most interesting things about him was his suit.  It looked like a dark business suit but it had a…hazy look to it, like there was a nimbus around the man.

The man in the hazy suit walked down the street with the red plastic gas can in his hand.  For some reason he slowed and then stopped next to a small blue sedan.  There was something wrong with this car.  He stood there for a long minute.

In that moment he was perfectly still.  He just waited like a statue in the park.  The day faded to twilight and still the man stood.  Eventually he was approached by 2 women he did not seem to recognize.  They must have been students at the University by the books in their hands, even if their hair color spoke of costume parties.

The man in the hazy suit didn’t pay any attention to the students.   He continued to stare at the air above the car, trying to catch…something that was there but not quite available.

The students were asking if he was ok when the man spun in a flash catching the first student in the head with a hammer.  The student went down in a heap.  The second turned to run but the man in the hazy suit was faster.  He hit her as well and she went down.  I screamed and screamed but it did as much good as yelling at the television.

The man then sat down his gas can and dragged the girls underneath the car.  He didn’t struggle with them.  He didn’t change expressions.  He just did his work.  I could almost feel joy and excitement coming from him.  He picked up his gas can and opened the spout.  I could feel exhilaration as he poured gas over the car and under it.  He placed the empty can on top of the car, stepped back and pulled matches from his pocket.  I could feel an almost sexual joy as he tossed the match onto the car.

The car burst into flames.  The man in the hazy suit stood and watched for a few moments before turning and walking calmly towards the University.

I woke up in a cold sweat.   That had seemed way too real.  I had only a few minutes before the alarm was to go off anyway so I got up and washed my face.  I stared at myself in the mirror.  “What a dream” I thought.  I headed into my bedroom and went to take off my Taco Barn uniform.  I wasn’t wearing it anymore.  I also realized that the hallway light was off.  When had I done that?

It didn’t matter.   I got ready for work at the Bagel Hut.  I flipped on the radio as I dressed.  After some chatter and worn out banter by the DJ’s they began to read news.  I had just picked up my Taco Barn uniform and I stopped at what I heard.  “…girls under the car and then the car set on fire.  No details have come out yet but it looks like murder.  I’m surprised no one saw this happen”  I did.  It may have been a dream but I saw it happen.  What could I do about it though?

Nothing I decided, just a strange coincidence.  Maybe I was psychic like on some of those TV shows.  Maybe I could be that detective who saw things before they happened and could fix them.  Maybe I was just losing my mind.  I held a strong possibility for the latter because I had convinced myself that I could smell gas on my Taco Barn uniform as I dropped it into the hamper.  Foolishness.

I went to work still pondering the dream.

That’s all today!

Join us next week for more from The man With the Hazy Suit!

My review of How To Build An e-Book!

Hello folks!  Today I am going to review a fabulous book that I had the opportunity to pre-read for clarity. (ie I got a free copy to read through and evaluate.  assume all links are affiliate links.).  That book is called  How To Build An E-Book.  It was written by Aaron Pogue over at Unstressed Syllables.com.

This book was launched a couple of weeks ago and I didn’t put up this post then because I thought there would be so much promotion that mine would get lost in the stream.  So I am here today to review this fine book and bring some new life to it.  Aaron’s sales page is here:Click here to visit Aaron Pogue.

Hello Aaron.  Ok here is a list of things that I noticed while reading your book.  They are in no particular order so take them as you will.

First, this book is very well written.  It is easy to read and in a very conversational style that flows very quickly.  It really goes in depth on how to convert blog posts to a useful ebook.  Aaron is a technical writer (as well as novelist) by trade and his attention to detail is fantastic.  The book is easy to understand and it really lays out the right way to put your ebook together.

I mainly write fiction but the information Aaron presents can be modified to even make a fiction ebook look good.  I actually used some of the techniques to tweak my first fiction ebook: Death With A Vengeance.  It is also instrumental in the planning of my non-fiction ebook about my daughters kidney disease and dialysis.  The chapter on Outlining brought back horrible memories of both high school and college English classes but gave me a great reminder on how to do it.  I haven’t needed to outline anything in years but for this book I am writing it was essential.

Aaron also gets into some simple points of Microsoft Word (or other word processors) and talk about styles for chapter headings and how to bookmark and link in between pages in the ebook.  There were several points that I didn’t know about and now use quite often.  I have been using Word since the old Wordperfect went belly up and there were several things that I still didn’t know.

This ebook has a really good flow to it.  The headers and footers are very clear so you always know where you are.  It is littered with practical examples of how to put the concepts into practice, from pictures to links, to info boxes that show what is exclusive content to your ebook and what has been published on your blog.

He even includes a checklist that you can use to follow the concepts exactly as they appear in the book.  Most of these things I had thought about but I didn’t know how to put them together in a coherent and cohesive manner.  This checklist solved that problem.

At the end, he also discusses how to publish your ebook and get it out to the masses.  From formats to publish in to using distributors like e-junkie it is all here. Click here to visit Aaron’s Sales Page!

All in all, this is a great book for learning to make an ebook.  You can tell that Aaron really loves his work and is good at it.  He has easy descriptions of the hard stuff like outlining (I hate outlining but it must be done!) and publishing.

If you want to publish your own e-book from your blog posts, go get this book.  It is well worth the $49.97 that he is charging.  He also has the book split into three modules that run $19.99 each if you would rather go that way.

Bottom line: Want to write a successful ebook from your vast collection of blog posts?  Get Aaron’s ebook today and get started!
