Twitter and the Explosion I Didn’t Expect.

I have discovered something very strange.  In the past 2 days, my twitter followers have gone crazy.  I went from 15 or so to nearly 100, just for getting some free ebooks.

I figured I would get some spam that I could ignore or some spam that was worth reading but every few hours my email has several “&$%(” is now following you on Twitter.”  messages.  It is very interesting.  Some I follow.  Some I haven’t.  some I look and see what their last few tweets were without following.  I have found some very interesting people online.

I have read that Twitter is a great way to boost readership of your blog and such.  Are all of these people going to read MY blog just because of Twitter?  I hope so.  I want to get my readership out there.  It just blows me away how a few simple things will bring about more than I ever imagined.  Really.  It is kind of daunting and a wee bit scary to be out there in the world and not just one of the lurking wraiths.

Now we decide further where to go.  What to people really want to read?  Do I really care what people want to read and just continue to write what I want to write.  I did call my blog Catharsis of the Bogue not What do the Masses Want.  So if you are here and reading this, I will be writing about whatever fancy strikes me.

Quick side note, my 4 year old nephew has named their pony (a real live pony mind you) “Fancy Britches”.  Every time I hear the word fancy it reminds me of that.  I was reading a book about pirates called The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodward (Amazon Link) One of the early pirate ships they renamed “Fancy” and I chuckled almost every time.

But I digress.  Also one of my favorite phrases.  So here it is, My Blog, My Rules with lots of help from genius wordpress guys (Dr. WordPress, Dave Doolin) and great writers Kelly Diels, and Josh Hanagarne.  I am going to start posting stories, you know fiction stuff.  Be prepared, not just for Boy Scouts anymore….

More to come from my brain to yours,

Justin

It is July 4th, yet again.

Hey folks, if you haven’t noticed, this post is simulcast both here on Catharsis of the Bogue and Cantankerous Old Coots.  It is almost the 4th of July here in the United States, one of my favorite holidays.

If you didn’t know, July 4th celebrates the day when a group of British citizens here in the American Colonies decided to give the finger to King George and make their own country.  July 4th is the day when those men we now call Patriots, signed one of the most important documents in the history of the world, the Declaration of Independence.

This is not just another day.  This is our Independence Day.  This is the day John Adams wrote to his wife about, saying,

“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

Those brave men who wrote, and then ratified that Declaration were so far from the milquetoast government that we have now.  They knowingly put their names to a document that labeled each and every one of them traitors to the most powerful country on the Earth at that time.  And they knew what they could make out of this country.  They knew that King George was not the way.  They knew that we had to have our own laws, our own officials, our own taxes.

And now, this country, with all of the problems that we do have, still shines as a beacon to the world, a democracy, a republic that has lasted for over 200 years.  This Thursday is July 4th, when we should be with our families.  We should raise a flag at dawn and salute whilst saying the Pledge of Allegiance.  We should read that Declaration of Independence and understand what they were fighting for.  We should read the Constitution and know what our country is built on.  There is no better time to be a patriot.

Tonight, Tuesday the 2nd, I took it upon myself to teach my Cub Scouts about the Declaration of Independence.  They range in ages from 8 to 10.  Most of them had only heard of the Declaration (and no, Abraham Lincoln did not have anything to do with the Declaration, despite the insistence of one 8 year old).  I gave each of them a copy that they could read with their families.  We read it together and discussed what it meant.  The other leaders and I tried not to realize that We, as Citizens of the USA, need to send a slightly edited copy of this document to Washington.  But I digress.  I know it is important to teach the Declaration and it’s meaning.  And to debunk the map on the back.  It exists only in Hollywood.

The Fourth of July, Independence Day, should not just be the day we watch fireworks.  It shouldn’t be the day we finish cleaning the car, or mowing the lawn.  We should be thankful for this country.  We should give thanks to whatever God we worship that we are here, and are free of tyranny.  We should thank our Service Men and Women for defending that freedom that we began fighting for back in 1775.

I love going to community festivals on Independence Day.  I really like to be with others, celebrating this country and the fact that we are Americans.  I love the “Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations” that John Adams predicted.  I love to stand and remove my hat as the flag passes by during the parade, even when most people don’t bother.  I love to sing that National Anthem with a field full of people, all of like mind.

Many people say “Happy Birthday America.”  I do to.  But more importantly, I say , “Happy Independence Day.”   May you all have a great Independence Day, go out and celebrate, don’t let it be just another day.

Get Over Here and Give Me Your Money!

You can spend less than 5 minutes on the net and fill your inbox with tons of  “click here to make millions on the internet” links.  There are so many different make money things and free reports and how to grow your readership ebooks out there that you could literally spend the rest of your life (would be short, I predict a stroke on day 4) reading nothing but how to get traffic and give things away for free.

I know every one of you reading this is nodding your head because it is true and you have done the same thing.  Many of these programs are from A-list bloggers too.  I know that is how they make their money.  It is proven to work.  Can I do it?  I don’t know if I want to get to that point.  I have gigabytes of ebooks all dedicated to this.

A question here, if the point is for these guys to make money, how can they give away so much stuff for free?  Granted, most of the money they make is from using the free stuff as a teaser and selling memberships or upgrades.  But still, there is enough free stuff to choke several small camels and still fill up pages and pages on my site.

I have 2 case studies.  I have not really done anything with these money makers yet but I want to chronicle these.  The first one I purchased several years ago in a round about way.  I saw this program either on the internet or on tv and ordered the “demo” cd-rom.  Only pay for postage order the whole thing if you want right?  Well I was wrong.  They took the shipping charge and sent me the whole kit (valued at some ridiculous price like $495).  There was a trial period and then send it back.  I called to send it back  so I wouldn’t be charged for it.  At the time I didn’t know the Marketing ploy.

You call to return the product, you get a special deal for $197, then $97, then $47, then $27, then $17!  Now this program was not bad so I ponied up the $17 and that was that.  I am sure that the program cost at least that much to make the cd’s and print the book.  I have often wondered why?  this guy was willing to get a darn near $0 return on investment so his product can be out there.  How many people take the special $97 or even $47 deal and he is ahead.

Fast forward to last week.  I was looking into a program to use affiliate links and some Resale rights stuff to be supplemental to my books I want to sell on the site.  The program was all online downloads, you guys have seen them.  Price $497 value for $97!  Not for me that time.  Try to close the window, wait special deal, $47!  Nah.  Try to close the window, $37!  This was turning into an auction, I decided to see how low it would go.  I ended up at $7.  I bought it for that and I may never use everything that is included.  For the price of a Subway sandwich and a drink, I can make money.

The really annoying thing about this site, after I had bought my basic members access, there were literally 20 pages of sales copy trying to get me to upgrade.  All of this before I even saw the program bits that I bought.  Now, there was not printing or duplicating costs with this program but there was a ton of time invested in putting all of those pages together and he was willing to get $7 for it.

The lesson that I learned from these products is have a minimum price and then jack it up 1400%.  Then don’t be afraid to drop it down to sell it.  With this model my fiction ebooks will be $130 to start.  The hard part I think is to get people to click the item initially.

How do you pick and choose what to read, keep, or get for free?  Will the book help me?  Will I actually read it? Why is this person giving me a free book?  It is all to make cash somewhere.  I am not going to be running things like that though.  I will start with a cheap price that will go up to a static price after X amount of books are sold.  And I am going with the paypal buttons to start.  Way too much time wasted messing with the shopping cart program right now.  Thanks for all of your input on that.

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!  Also, my first Newsletter will be going out on St. Patricks Day, Sign up here!

Until Later!

Why do Doctors have all of the time in the world?

I took my 3 year old to her transplant clinic appointment today.

I have taken her to many of them since she was diagnosed with kidney failure, and all through dialysis and now 7 months after her transplant.  It continuously amazes me how those clinics could give a jolly jack fart about your time yet freak out if you are any bit late to the appointment.  Granted some times it is quick but good grief.

Today, after I registered at the hospital (15 mins) and then waited for labs to be drawn (25 mins) I was about 20 minutes late for our appointment.  I thought that we would be next in line and sail through.  But I was of course WRONG!!!  although it was only another 35 minutes of waiting in the waiting room followed by another 20 of waiting in the clinic room.  All told, we spent 2 hours and 20 minutes for what amounted to 5 mins with the doctor and about that with the dietician and the social worker.

Oh well.  what can you do.  It’s not like complaining does any good, they just say that they are busy.  So what exactly is the point of making an appointment?  For that matter, what is the point of not just coming a half hour late?  I am sure you would still have to wait.  I should have brought my ketllebell, that would make them wonder, a sweaty guy swinging iron in the childrens hospital….maybe next month….
