This post is about all of those things that get taken for granted with kids. I am reaching a strange time in my life right now. My kids are growing up. and I am right along with them for the ride. I have written about this before, I never really thought about my kids actually covering the space between about 9 and 20.

If you have been reading this blog for any length of time you know by now that I am the stay at home parent in our house. Over the summer however, my wife was home on maternity leave with our youngest son being born and all.
In September, she went back to work. It has been interesting trying to re-establish our roles in the house and get back on a good routine. Even this post is about a month in the making. I have been trying to write it for that long without success. I have been doing way too many things and putting this post off. I have another one on procrastination in the works, maybe I should combine them!
It was quite a change when she went back to work, especially for the kids. We had spent 3 months with her always home. Now she was leaving again and I had to step back up as the full time homemaker as well as internet guru, company president, blogger etc. None of these are hard, none of these are different than what we have been doing for years.

Yesterday I received one of those virtual slaps in the face that parents get as their kids grow up. I am talking about my oldest daughter Leatha today, she will be 10 in August! There is another one.
It has been a wild 10 years, full of new things since she was born. I can’t hardly remember what it was like before her though. (Warning: this post will probably be filled with cliches but I really mean them!)
And now a list of virtual slaps in the face,
1. A Girl! My first child is a girl! August 2000
2. She can walk!
3. She can talk!
4. She can run around and jump in puddles like it is the most natural thing in the world!
5. She can read!
6. School!
7. Little kid toys are too small, Big kid toys are almost too big!
8. Baptism at 8 yrs old!
9. Top of the 3rd grade!
10. Maturing at a frightening rate.
This last one is what I am on about today. It is very humbling to have your kids hit a point where they need things like deodorant. Now, Leatha is not one that is trying to grow up too fast. She is still trying to hold on to being a little girl. But, alas, she is growing up.
This past week she has grown enough and matured enough that she needs deodorant now. I am not complaining, I am not mocking this at all, it is a coming of age that everyone goes through. I just feel old and like a parent. Bah! I am just glad that my wife is in charge of the menstrual stuff, I don’t want to do that one.
I only hope that there are a few years that go by before that one because I really worry about the state of the world and the people in it. My wife had an 11 year old in the ER last week who was pregnant. My daughter is going to wear a suit of armor and I am going to escort her everywhere in about 6 months. With a club.
What do you all think???

hey there! Well it has now been 18 months since my youngest son was born. In all of that time, he has not had a haircut. Sometimes I think my wife is just longing for a girl still and sometimes I think she is trying to do a Samson thing, you know, long hair = great strength. I myself have been patient up until about a month ago.
You see, she likes to keep a lock of the kids hair form when they were babies for the scrapbook. No problem with that, she has done the same on all 4 kids. I was just getting annoyed with the long curly locks that my son was getting. I combed his hair for church the other day and could almost put it in a pony tail. I began the sarcastic rantings of “You need a haircut you hippie!” and from there I didn’t know how it would go with the wife.
She liked his curly hair. But there was a problem brewing. For some reason this kid likes to put things on his head. He is the first kid in 4 that likes to wear hats. He likes to put his blanket on his head. He likes to put a plate of mashed potatoes on his head. The other day he dumped his hamburger off of his plate and anointed himself with ketchup. His long locks were getting filled with garbage and it was harder to clean out.
So, a momentus day in the Matthews house, the final First Haircut! Mark it on your calendar. I don’t know why you would want to mark it on your calendar so that is up to you. January 9, 2012 marks the day Tristan lost his baby curls and now looks like a young man. Everyone is happy with this. He was the first kid to just sit there and get the haircut without any crying, screaming or fidgeting. Cameron was a handful when he had his first cut. He screamed and fought and we had to hold him still to cut it. He still wiggles and fidgets too much.
So, for now, both of the boys have short hair and will not be mistaken for girls! a side note, everyone in the family got trimmed last night, the girls got a bit trimmed off, I got a bunch cut off and the wife got a trim too. My wife cuts our hair most of the time. She has become really good at getting everyone to look good and not like the stereotypical “Mom cuts my hair” thing. Besides we figured that it saved us near $75 in family haircuts. Not bad for a bit of work.
Back to the side note, I opened the trash can this morning to throw away some breakfast garbage and it took me a minute to figure out what the furry animal in the garbage was. I was tired and the caffeine hadn’t kicked in yet is my only excuse. Of course, it was just the hair from last night in the trash. Still made me do a double take.
Well that is about it for today, I realize that this should be a poetry Tuesday but this was just too good to write about. Do any of you have a good first haircut story? the comments are waiting for you to share it. Oh yeah, he wants to cut his own hair now…we have created a monster.
Have a great day.
