Cyber Monday?!? The Holiday Horror Continues…

SWANSEA, WALES - NOVEMBER 24: Staff at the Am...

Today is now known as Cyber Monday.  It sounds ominous and it probably should, you couldn’t possibly shop online any other time of the year.  So why do they insist on getting your cash today??  The only explanation I can think of is so the online retailers can get in on some of that Black Friday cash.

It is not like anyone shops online for Black Friday anyway.  You should, many of the same deals in the stores are available online at the same time.  And you don’t have to stand out in the cold or deal with crowds, out of stock items and people in general.

I don’t fit into any category you have.

I keep signing up for sites to do some advertising.  Kontiki, Chitika and Google AdSense to name a few.  Each one of these asks what category your blog is in.  The problem is, I don’t fit into any of their categories!  I usually end up putting general and going from there.

This keeps bringing me to a debate.  What is my blogs niche?  Does it even have or need one?   I have read several things by now about the importance of having a niche that is defined.  Well I do to some extent.  I want to write about kettlebells, being a stay at home dad, fishing, car repair, migraines and what I learned from 2 years of my daughters dialysis and subsequent transplant.  This narrows down the field.  I don’t want to do fashion or celebrities, or WordPress finesse.  There are many blogs out there better than mike for that.

I think my category and niche will be me.  My thoughts and collated knowledge on a few subjects that others will find some value from my take.  Right or wrong (according to you) I will express my opinion and let the world take it for what it will.

I still won’t be pigeon-holed into a pre-defined box just to make them happy.  Maybe I will specialize a bit more in the future but for now, my niche is me.  I will sell my own stuff.

Any thoughts on this?  I would love comments or your ideas as well.

I don’t fit into any category and I am OK with that!

SAHD Friday: The new one slows us all down

This title proves prophetic today.  I had forgotten just how much an infant forces you to slow down certain things.

Over the past 2 weeks I have had to slow down many times, with my writing and housework and yard work.  I have watched more movies and tv shows in the last 2 weeks than I have in the past 6 months when I started this whole online venture.

I have been writing about unplugging the past few days and I think that he has a lot to do with this.  Now, if you have read any of this blog in the past, you know that my family is very important to me.  I love doing things with my kids and I really am excited to watch them grow and develop.

It is so much fun to see them grow and change through all of the ages.  It is fun to see their tastes in music and movies change and mature as they grow.  It is also fun to see what the new one will choose when he can control what to watch.  My 4 year old is finally gtting into some of her own things and not just copying her older sister.  My son has always kind of done his own thing, it will be interesting to see if my new son follows him or does something totally new.

I think it has been good for all of us to just slow down.  It has been good for me to get off of the computer and just hold the baby for a couple of hours at a time.  These are the times you can’t get back if you miss them.  This is exactly why I am a dad.

Being a Stay At Home Dad allows me to see all of these milestones.  These 4 kids I own make me want to work my butt off and be able to stay home with them and all of the things that they accomplish.  I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Have a great weekend!  We get to watch fireworks tomorrow!

Why kettlebells are cool…for me

There are so many different places around the web to find out about all things kettlebell.  I just want to tell the world why I like them.

First, there is nothing quite like a piece of iron.  Doesn’t matter what kind, iron is cool.  I play with the blacksmith’s trade as well and there is something very very satisfying about taking something as elemental as iron and bending it to your will.  I don’t intend to forge a kettlebell or change a kettlebell beyond drilling a hole in it (see http://justinsbrainpan.com/2010/01/13/being-a-geek-c…ake-you-so-far/ for pics of that).  I like to swing the things around.  It is much the same as swinging a hammer.  Primal.

There is a totally different feeling when finishing a kettlebell workout than finishing any other type.  I am usually very tired but still feel like I can go out and move a mountain.  or pick up a car.  (one of my future goals as well)  I have never felt the same type of feeling with any machine I have ever been on and I have not even felt it with free weights.

There is a sense of something old, a part of something historical when using kettlebells.  There are several out there with lovely colored vinyl coatings, I don’t have those.  I have black iron kettlebells.  I want them to get beat up.  I want chips and dents.  I want minor rust.  I want to tame “The Beast” (106 pound kettlebell).  A far out goal but still I want to be part of that too short list.

I like to be a part of old history.  I want to be a trapper in the early 1800’s.  I like to make clothes in styles that predate the Civil War.  I like to lift kettlebells.

I am not going to give any instructions, there are too many others better at it than me; but start at www.dragondoor.com and surf there if you are interested.  Otherwise seek out an RKC certified trainer.  I will be one in the future.  I can’t wait to join those ranks.

Now, if you will excuse me, it is time to do my swings and maybe go find a mountain to move.
