Oddities, Profundities, Profanities and Dad Stuff

I’m not taking your @#^$ing survey!

I know it is not just me but have you noticed an abundance of surveys EVERYWHERE lately?  I for one am getting tired of it.  This constant need for companies to find out what you think has entered the annoying.  This sounds almost like a rant that would be good over at http://cantankerousoldcoots.com, but today, it is here!

This survey thing is not new.  I have been bugged for the past few years with them.  The first ones were the phone surveys.  They call you up and ask you to rate your last visit to X.  Sometimes I answer these when it has to do with the hospital and my daughter.  It was however one of these surveys that prompted this post.  They called for my wife and I really don’t know what they wanted but I told him she would never be available.  In hindsight, that was probably mean but he was a douche on the phone.

Now they have surveys to win gift cards on damn near ever receipt that you can get.  Most of them are longer than the receipt itself.  I bought a bike tire and a donut at Walmart yesterday and the receipt was 14 inches long.  Ridiculous.  A waste of my time and the paper it is printed on.  Like I really have time to call you up and answer inane questions for the 1 in a million chance that I can get a $50 gift card.

I did call one on a receipt from PetsMart the other day for a coupon so that I could get a free fish, and then I proceeded to lose the receipt.  I knew I shouldn’t have bothered.

The other thing that is really pissing me off lately is the pop up or lightbox surveys that come up at what seems like every damn website that is not a blog!  I am so annoyed with certain companies that do this that I don’t even go to their website anymore.  It just seems like every time you turn on a site, there is a box of varying size begging you to complete your survey.

Even at Disneyland they want you to complete a survey.  My wife signed up and I thought “Ok not too bad”.  That was in the first part of October last year.  Last week the survey came into my email box.  I had forgotten about it so I clicked into the survey.  It didn’t take very long but it was a huge whine about why we hadn’t been back to Disneyland since we left in October!  I don’t know about you, but my kids would live to go to Disneyland every month.  There is just no way to afford that!

Which brings me to the online, “Get paid to take survey’s” scams.  I have signed up for several “reputable” companies that you have seen and or heard about on TV.  Not just infomercials, shows like the NBC Nightly News and the like.  Here is the thing and the reason I have dumped most of them from my inbox lately.  I can’t seem to find ANY of their surveys I “Qualify” for.

I have taken the time to fill out all of their information, all of the demographic stuff which brings the “you have a new survey” emails.  When I click into the survey it gets about 6 questions into the thing and gives me the “Were sorry but you aren’t good enough for your opinion to count” message.  I have begun to think that they only want the information from the first of the survey and that is how they get out of paying.  Cheap corporate bastards.

So, if you are out there and you like taking surveys, go for it.  If you are working with online paid surveys, go for it, you can have my share.  If you are a company and need to have a survey to figure out how people like your stuff, maybe you are not paying as much attention to your customers as you should be.

I have run a couple of surveys in the past on here and have had very minimal response.  The only reason I can figure out why there are so many surveys out there is so that the .75% that actually get answered have at least some value to advertisers.

I for one am tired of the surveys.

A new Name for the email list?

I have been quite obsessed with this Pit Of Despair thing lately.  Maybe that is just a metaphor for my life right now.  Except I don’t have much to despair about.  I am not sure what is causing it.  I don’t feel banished to the lower levels.  I don’t even feel bad about the setup I have.  But, the pit it is.

And I have to say it like this…

So that got me thinking.  Should I change the name of my email list to something like “Crap from the Pit of Despair”?  Maybe not.  The real problem is me and not writing.  Maybe I do need to be chained to my desk with magical chains that don’t release until I have written 1500 words across various blogs every day.  That could be helpful.

There is just so much I want to do that I have not been doing.  Excuses abound and I am not going to bore you further.  I am going to get back into podcasting though.  And, you may have guessed it, I am going to call my new podcast “From The Pit of Despair”.  Let’s see how that goes and see if I can attract some readers and maybe some sponsors huh?

Here is one thing I would like to know.  Who is reading this stuff that I put out?  I know the venerable Ralph is reading, he is the only one who seems to make comments.  Bob drops by once in a while out of obligation but who else is out there?  Drop a quick comment, or an email or callme direct at…wait, that is probably not a good idea.  Comments are probably the best.  Let me know you are here.  Let me know you at least glance over this stuff.  I am going to get my act back together.  Look for Poetry Tuesday to return, as well as  Fiction Saturday.   Other observations are coming as well as the podcast on Wednesday or Thursday.

Thanks for reading, thanks for coming by.  Please let me know you were here, like Kilroy.

Have a great Monday.

What they never tell you about making money online.

Shopping cart.

It is simple to read a ton of stuff on the net about making money online.  It is easy to start trying but they don’t tell you actually how hard it is to do “things” right.

There is information about how much work it takes, you do have to look for it.  Many of the people who actually make a great living online work their butts off.

Now, I have been around the blogosphere for a while now, almost 7 months.  I have seen so many make money quick things out there that I can spot a sales pitch in about 12 words.  I have taken steps to try and make sure anything I sell doesn’t sound like those.  As of right now, I have nothing but one fiction ebook to sell.

This weekend I have been working on 2 of my sites that I hope to be making money with right away so that I can write more books.  And more fiction.  I am really trying to create products and interest in what I have to offer.  I am even working on a free ebook for my mail list subscribers and new subscribers, to be released soon.

The other sites I am working on are: First, BrendasQuiltShop.com.  This site I keep calling my wifes, and while it bears her name, and her stuff, it is more of a family business that I do the sales and web stuff for.  We used to have everything up on eBay and we sold some stuff over the years on eBay.  Details are on brendasquiltshop.com.

I decided that eBay was just too expensive to pay listing fees and final value fees for what we have sold.  I try to price stuff with what I think people will pay, that doesn’t leave much profit after the fees.  So I dug into the world of WordPress and integrated a shopping cart that I can list everything we have for sale and sell it myself.  If you get a chance, check it out and send me some feedback about anything I can do better on that site.

The second site that I have been working on is my main business site, AnvilForge Limited.  I am not going to link to it today, it is not finished to where I need it to be.  There is a bunch of copy that I need to write on the about page, and the sales pages, promoting wordpress installs and web maintenance as well as my blogs.

One of these days I will figure out how to write about being a Stay at home dad in a way that will make people want to pay for the privelege of reading it.  I am working on something with real value and not a bunch of worthless info that will sit on someones hard drive and slowly degrade into mediocrity.  Sure, I will have the original investment but I feel strongly about repeat customers and not turning into one of those guys who just sells systems that don’t really help.

So there you are, what they don’t tell you about making money is that it is hard work.  Sitting back and letting money drop on your head is not going to happen.  Yet.   Thanks for reading, I have to get back to work.

Still striving to never work for anyone again,

-Justin

Only 15 minutes left!

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Image via Wikipedia

Hello all. I bet you thought the title of this post was one of those fake scarcity things or that my blog was going to be gone in 15 minutes. Not even close. If you have ever heard of Seth Godin, and let’s face it if you are into internet business anywhere you probably have, he started a little trend a while ago called the Domino Project. All of the details are on Amazon.com (my amazon affiliate link not domino project).

He started with a Kindle book called “Poke the Box” and the project has grown. Check out the details for yourself HERE. One of the latest pieces of the domino project has to do with Ralph Waldo Emerson. They are running a 30 day writing challenge at http://ralphwaldoemerson.me/ You sign up here and commit to creating something over the next 30 days. See the trends on Twitter: #Trust30.
