What a waste of a weekend..

Well now it is time for me to get back into some regular blog writing, now that my blogs are working properly again.  It has been a while since all of my sites have been actually loading and working correctly.  Apparently there were some problems that have been brewing for a while that I didn’t realize were problems.  I have all of my sites hosted through Hostgator (no I am not posting a link here, for reasons that will become clear) and they sent me a message about high server use last year.  I thought it was all taken care of after I killed a bad plugin on one of my WordPress sites.

Apparently, it was not fixed.  Earlier this year I found that my .htaccess file had been held for ransom  modified by hostgator so that I could not write or edit the thing.  This wouldn’t let me install or run any security plugins or caching plugins that THEY RECOMMENDED I INSTALL!  I found this out but the sites were still working for the most part so I ignored it.  Sites would load slowly and I would get 504 (Gateway Timeout) errors more and more often.  I finally decided to start blogging regularly again and I had a hard time getting to this site to do it.

It was last Tuesday, now a week ago, that all 13 of my sites would not load and were constantly getting the 504 errors.  I contacted Hostgator and after about an hour on chat, I was directed to an open ticket from a year ago that I had thought was closed.  Well, after some back and forth and me reporting 2 different times about not being able to get into my sites, they finally ran a scan on my account. To my surprise, the scan covered 130,872 files and 13,936 of them were infected with malware.

Well that set up an exciting weekend at the computer for me, and not writing.  The malware was in the main wordpress .php files, plugin files, theme files, pretty much most of the .php files in my account.  After all of the fun, I had found 3 different forms of the malware, all of which were designed to create backdoors to my sites.  A fat lot of good it would do for anyone to break into my sites, with all of the state secrets and tubs of money that go through them.  Oh that’s right, THEY ARE ALL FREAKING BLOGS OR INFORMATIONAL SITES!

Ok, deep breath.  That rant will be over at CantankerousOldCoots.com later today.

Back to the fun, I found that reinstalling the .php files was the best way to get rid of the virus.  WordPress wasn’t a problem, and some of the plugins were easy to install.  Other plugins were not available, but replacements were, so they got installed.  Some of my theme files and plugins however, were no longer available.  You may  say, “Just find something else then.”  But here is the rub, over the years I have done extensive modifications on most of those themes and some of the plugins, so it wasn’t easy to replace them.  So I didn’t.  I ended up going through what seemed like 10000 files (I know it was less but I wasn’t counting) and manually deleting the malicious code from each one.

It was a huge deal and took me most of the weekend to do.  Finally, on Sunday night, I finished and all of my sites loaded like they should have.  I spent Monday updating and working on plugins, some of which still had issues, but finally got all of them finished and working like they should.  And I got my .htaccess file back.  And finally the security plugins that I needed.

Hopefully, and I really hope so, all of this is finished and I can get on with my sites working and doing what they are supposed to do.  There are some very painful and creative things that I would like to do to these people that created this malware and got it all over my account.  I should write a book about that, it would rival a Stephen King.  But I digress, I will probably just leave it be and write more posts.

Break out the bubbly! COB is one year old!

Monkeys Blogging

hello all of you wonderful readers!  I ahve hit a milestone here at Catharsis of the Bogue.  It was 1 year ago today that I put up my first ever blog post on the internet!  That blog was on WordPress.com at the time and frustrated me because I couldn’t modify it enough and put ads so right after the first of the year I migrated to justinsbrainpan.com.

There have been so many good things to happen over this year.  I have met many many good people and learned so much about Blogging as a whole.  Sometimes I still feel like I am coming in at the tail end of the Blogging thing but other times I am right in the thick of it.

Things have changed around here since those first posts.  Now, there is not so much of a dear diary feeling, and I actually want people to read my stuff.  I think my writing has improved greatly.

I have received much help and suggestions from people who have come and gone during this past year.  I remember when I was celebrating 3 months, and then 6 months and a lot of my friends were only wraiths on twitter and no longer Blogging.

There are people who I have respected and learned a lot from who have decided that Blogging is not what they want to do anymore.  Yes, it is Nathan Hangen but I can only thank him for giving me so much drive and desire to create.  It was his…influence that started me on the podcasting thing.  Thanks Nathan, just one more thing to do.  I still want to blog though.

So what is in store for the future of this site?  For now, business as usual.  There will be some changes coming but they will be a while before implementing.   I never dreamed when I wrote that first “diary entry” that I would be here now, with 3 blogs, 3 partners and all of you readers.  This post will be number 200 on this site.  One of those is a guest post, the rest are mine.  There are also nearly 102,000 words written here, that is a decent sized novel.  And that doesn’t include the podcasts.  There will be more of those, as well as some fiction audio.  I think I am getting myself figured out now.

So, for all of you that have been here from the beginning, Thank You so very much for sticking with me.  For those who have recently come here, or even those who are visiting for the first time today, Thank You very much for being here.  I hope that you all stick with me for the next few years, ’cause I ain’t goin’ no where.

Thanks so much yet again, Poetry will resume next week!

-Justin

It is time to break out the Virtual Toilet…

Toilet with flush water tank

Summer is over and it is time to get out my virtual toilet.

I have over 20 post “ideas” that are queued up waiting to be written on this blog.  None of them are going to be written!

The inspiration for those posts seems to be gone so why keep them around?  I am not.  I am going to flush them all!  It has been a long summer full of excuses and well, nothing.

I am sure that if you have visited here over the summer you have seen a stream of nothing new.  Nothing.  Well, that is changing. I am back to writing.

It is September, the kids are back to school, I need to get back to the reasons I started this blog; to write.  To get my brain out to the world.  To make myself write and get my books done with no more excuses.

How about Poetry Tuesday again?  How about Fiction Saturday?  How about SAHD Friday?  All coming back as well as new and exciting sites.

If you are a human I would like to comment and at least let me know that you are out there and actually reading.

It is time to come back to the reality of this blog, it is nearly 3 years old now.  It is time to get my lazy butt writing again.

If you are real, thanks for being here.  If you are a robot, 010001010000111100001010100011100110010011101100111011001.

See you tomorrow.

What they never tell you about making money online.

Shopping cart.
Image via Wikipedia

It is simple to read a ton of stuff on the net about making money online.  It is easy to start trying but they don’t tell you actually how hard it is to do “things” right.

There is information about how much work it takes, you do have to look for it.  Many of the people who actually make a great living online work their butts off.

Now, I have been around the blogosphere for a while now, almost 7 months.  I have seen so many make money quick things out there that I can spot a sales pitch in about 12 words.  I have taken steps to try and make sure anything I sell doesn’t sound like those.  As of right now, I have nothing but one fiction ebook to sell.

This weekend I have been working on 2 of my sites that I hope to be making money with right away so that I can write more books.  And more fiction.  I am really trying to create products and interest in what I have to offer.  I am even working on a free ebook for my mail list subscribers and new subscribers, to be released soon.

The other sites I am working on are: First, BrendasQuiltShop.com.  This site I keep calling my wifes, and while it bears her name, and her stuff, it is more of a family business that I do the sales and web stuff for.  We used to have everything up on eBay and we sold some stuff over the years on eBay.  Details are on brendasquiltshop.com.

I decided that eBay was just too expensive to pay listing fees and final value fees for what we have sold.  I try to price stuff with what I think people will pay, that doesn’t leave much profit after the fees.  So I dug into the world of WordPress and integrated a shopping cart that I can list everything we have for sale and sell it myself.  If you get a chance, check it out and send me some feedback about anything I can do better on that site.

The second site that I have been working on is my main business site, AnvilForge Limited.  I am not going to link to it today, it is not finished to where I need it to be.  There is a bunch of copy that I need to write on the about page, and the sales pages, promoting wordpress installs and web maintenance as well as my blogs.

One of these days I will figure out how to write about being a Stay at home dad in a way that will make people want to pay for the privelege of reading it.  I am working on something with real value and not a bunch of worthless info that will sit on someones hard drive and slowly degrade into mediocrity.  Sure, I will have the original investment but I feel strongly about repeat customers and not turning into one of those guys who just sells systems that don’t really help.

So there you are, what they don’t tell you about making money is that it is hard work.  Sitting back and letting money drop on your head is not going to happen.  Yet.   Thanks for reading, I have to get back to work.

Still striving to never work for anyone again,

-Justin
