OOPS! Plans changed!

Hey Folks, Quick update. All of my Carefully laid plans of posting and having things ready went out the window yesterday when the baby, so planned for induction on the 5th, came!

Official Announcement: We had a baby boy just before 6am on July 1! I am very excited to have a second son, but I am very nervous as he spent yesterday in the ICU because he decided to inhale some fluid as he was born.

As for all of this empire thing, Press Pause. This is a carefully written Stay at Home Dad post for today, there will probably not be a Man in the Hazy suit tomorrow. Sorry about that. Life has taken it’s toll on Fiction Saturday the past couple of months.

Have a great weekend. For those in the US, have a great 4th of July, remember those who have made our country and those who continue to keep it strong.

Thanks for reading, you guys are all awesome!

SAHD Friday: Raising the Baby

Hey folks, I was inspired today.  I started off to write about how nice it is that my older kids are wanting and able to help with the new baby.

That still will be a focus.  However, my oldest daughter was watching a TV show and the two teenage boys on the show were babysitting.  They obviously didn’t know anything about kids or babysitting and it was hilarious to watch these kids run around and try to get the baby’s diaper changed, and get the baby to sleep.  Really reminded me of the post I was thinking of!

It really reminded me of watching my kids with the new baby. My kids are all about helping us with the baby.  They both really want to feed and water the baby as well as hold him.  OK, water is just kidding.  But they really want to help.  Bath time is fun, they argue over who gets to wash his toes and who gets to lotion his back.

He is very pampered (Groucho voice: “In more ways than one, if you know what I mean.”) by his siblings.  It is exciting to see them want to change a diaper or hold him so that I can use the bathroom or rotate the laundry.  It is nice when they help calm him down when he is crying.

I am glad to give them that chance, I was not old enough to help with my sisters so when my first daughter was born I was very much a rookie.  I hope that my kids will have at least a familiarity with how to care for a new baby.  Except for the new baby that is, he will have to rely on being the Uncle who helps when my oldest has kids in 30 years or so. (is 40 too old for kids????)

Any thoughts or questions?  I would love to hear from you in the comments!

Get a Haircut you Hippie!

hey there!  Well it has now been 18 months since my youngest son was born.  In all of that time, he has not had a haircut.  Sometimes I think my wife is just longing for a girl still and sometimes I think she is trying to do a Samson thing, you know, long hair = great strength.  I myself have been patient up until about a month ago.

You see, she likes to keep a lock of the kids hair form when they were babies for the scrapbook.  No problem with that, she has done the same on all 4 kids.  I was just getting annoyed with the long curly locks that my son was getting.  I combed his hair for church the other day and could almost put it in a pony tail.  I began the sarcastic rantings of “You need a haircut you hippie!” and from there I didn’t know how it would go with the wife.

She liked his curly hair.  But there was a problem brewing.  For some reason this kid likes to put things on his head.  He is the first kid in 4 that likes to wear hats.  He likes to put his blanket on his head.  He likes to put a plate of mashed potatoes on his head.  The other day he dumped his hamburger off of his plate and anointed himself with ketchup.  His long locks were getting filled with garbage and it was harder to clean out.

So, a momentus day in the Matthews house, the final First Haircut!  Mark it on your calendar.  I don’t know why you would want to mark it on your calendar so that is up to you.  January 9, 2012 marks the day Tristan lost his baby curls and now looks like a young man.  Everyone is happy with this.  He was the first kid to just sit there and get the haircut without any crying, screaming or fidgeting.  Cameron was a handful when he had his first cut.  He screamed and fought and we had to hold him still to cut it.  He still wiggles and fidgets too much.

So, for now, both of the boys have short hair and will not be mistaken for girls!  a side note, everyone in the family got trimmed last night, the girls got a bit trimmed off, I got a bunch cut off and the wife got a trim too.  My wife cuts our hair most of the time.  She has become really good at getting everyone to look good and not like the stereotypical “Mom cuts my hair” thing.  Besides we figured that it saved us near $75 in family haircuts.  Not bad for a bit of work.

Back to the side note, I opened the trash can this morning to throw away some breakfast garbage and it took me a minute to figure out what the furry animal in the garbage was.  I was tired and the caffeine hadn’t kicked in yet is my only excuse.  Of course, it was just the hair from last night in the trash.  Still made me do a double take.

Well that is about it for today, I realize that this should be a poetry Tuesday but this was just too good to write about.  Do any of you have a good first haircut story?  the comments are waiting for you to share it. Oh yeah, he wants to cut his own hair now…we have created a monster.

Have a great day.
