All this internet $#!^….

You know, I love the internet for the most part.  Information at your fingertips, satellite pics of your house in seconds, news almost as it happens, hour by hour weather, and idiots.

I have been here working on the net since 2008, and I have learned and changed a lot during that time.  Lately, I think I have grown complacent with internet as the rest of the world has.  My kids don’t remember a time without the internet.  They have somewhat of a hard time going without it on vacation.  I have posted before about what good it does the family to just unplug and get away from the screens.  My 4 1/2 year old is dying to go fishing and camping.  He loves the outdoors.

So this brings me to my point, some internet providers and domain registrars suck.  Big huge deep sucking holes of darkness.  The first of these I had issues with was justhost.  Don’t go there, do get a site from them even though they are cheap.  They will drain the soul out of you after they cancel your domain name.  I had one of their packages with justinsbrainpan.com registered with them.  All fine, until I outgrew the service tier and decided to go to a decent provider at hostgator.com.  (you can go there).  The problem was my domain was registered with justhost, and they didn’t tell me that I couldn’t use it after I didn’t have their service anymore.  so I lost justinsbrainpan.com and ended up with catharsisofthebogue.com, that I registered independently with 1and1.com. don’t go there either.

Recently, 1 and 1 internet and I have been in some fun battles for my domains.  There was apparently an issue with billing on my account, and they decided to cancel my account, making my sites go down as they expired.  First was Ameliasmakeawish.com, followed by bkmnursing, and then catharsisofthebogue.  Skip forward to a bunch of fighting, and I got most of my domains back active.  Amelias make a wish and Catharsis of the bogue are gone.  registered with some company in china and japan, that has nothing for content.  But i am pissed.  I have ported the sites to this one, catharsisofthebogue.com and Amelias is ameliasmakeawish2012.com.

But don’t for one minute think that I registered those new domains with 1 and 1.  I have registered them with haylestorm.net/clients.  Ok, I am biased as this is partly my site, one that I partner with Bob Hayles on, and we are now resellers of Enom domain registration.  Not a bad deal either, $12.95 per year for most top level domains.

I digress.  Now, I have a list of times that I am going to be transferring all of my domains away from 1 and 1 and then warning everyone to stay away from that company.  The moral of the story is, watch your domains.  If you are not the owner of your domain because it is free from your hosting company, do whatever you can to make sure you end up owning the domain.  Then keep track of the billing and renew dates.

All in all, I guess it is ok to change domains.  I did lose all of my page rank and alexa scores, and it is going to take time to build back up.  So I am glad you are here reading.  I did it once, I will do it again.

Thanks for reading, share the links like crazy!

Stumble, Stumble, Stumble (upon), Fall!

Hello Folks.  I hope you had a good weekend and all of you fathers, a good Fathers day.  I know I did.

The point today is a reset.  Start over from a point, not the beginning.  Last week was hard for me to balance for some reason.  The kids are home from school for the summer, yardwork needs to be done house needs to be cleaned.  Somewhere I didn’t get much writing done.  I did start playing with podcasts, and worked a ton getting our quilting business site up and running.

I still am not finished with all of the things that I have for sale but it is functional for about half.  Check out http://brendasquiltshop.com.  It is amazing what you can do with WordPress!

So, This week I am resetting. I didn’t get today’s post out before now, and that is ok.  I didn’t get a quality piece done for fiction saturday and that is bothering me a bit but I am not going to stress about that either.  I didn’t even get something up over at Cantankerous Old Coots for today. That is ok too.  We have good stuff coming for the rest of the week.

Thanks for staying with me over the week, traffic has still been fairly good even with my slacking.  Taking a reset yesterday and today, posts tues, thurs, fri, and a good one on saturday.  I may have to rethink another day off in posting and hope my rankings don’t slip any further.  We will see about that.

I have a bunch of products and books that I am either starting or barely into working on including a Coots collaboration with Ralph Carlson.  Look for that in a bit.

Have a good day folks, remember the lessons that we tried to teach in the first Pre-Writing Challenge, have some posts in queue so this doesn’t happen.  The only issue with that, if you use a post from the queue, replace it or you have nothing left!

See you tomorrow.

Cyber Monday?!? The Holiday Horror Continues…

SWANSEA, WALES - NOVEMBER 24: Staff at the Am...

Today is now known as Cyber Monday.  It sounds ominous and it probably should, you couldn’t possibly shop online any other time of the year.  So why do they insist on getting your cash today??  The only explanation I can think of is so the online retailers can get in on some of that Black Friday cash.

It is not like anyone shops online for Black Friday anyway.  You should, many of the same deals in the stores are available online at the same time.  And you don’t have to stand out in the cold or deal with crowds, out of stock items and people in general.

Are you Cheating on Me????

Well hello!  I don’t know if I have paointed out enough times the computer problems I have had the past few weeks.  I picked up a virus on my laptop that ended up wiping out most of my OS.  I have been using my laptop for most everything in running my business for the past couple of years.

I spent way too much time working on it until I was able to migrate much of my data to my older desktop and use that.  Now the desktop is a decent computer, same OS and almost as fast s it was ok, just a pain in the rear end.  I used it and it worked fine for  while until I was able to get the factory discs to restore the laptop.

It was only then I found my hard drive was messed up by this same virus.  Ok this is not just a sob story, I have everything sorted out now and I am ok with everything.  I just had a funny thought that inspired this post.

Through all of this, I felt like I was cheating on my laptop with my desktop.  I just hope that, now the laptop is back, the desktop won’t be too pissed.  The desktop knew with wouldn’t last.  It was only a matter of time.  It should be happy I am using it as a server to spool printing and run the wireless network.

Yet, if I ever find the guy who wrote that virus I will personally carve a chuck out of him for every byte of info that I lost, and another chunk for every hour I spent working on it, and yet another chunk for the money I spent fixing it.  Then maybe another for the money I lost while the computer was down.  I would go to court and my defense would be, “But he wrote a virus that I got and it wiped out my system.”  Judge frowns at pile of bloody chunks.  “Case Dismissed, Justifiable Homicde.”

It is funny to put computers in the place of people in a soap opera.  I am just glad it is easier to juggle computers and data than people.  I am continuously intrigued with the people douchebags who cheat on their spouses and how they can live 2 lives like that.  I couldn’t.  I don’t want to.

I will stick to jealous computers.

What you you guys think?
